Roadtrip Tips

Over the past three days, I have driven over 19 hours. Now, over the span of 72 hours that doesn’t seem like much, but when your feet are swollen because you haven’t been walking enough and your knees are sore from keeping them bent for so long, it’s a long time. I would like to think of myself as almost a “roadtrip pro” especially since this is the second roadtrip to and from Florida in the past few months. It takes us about 12 hours with stops to get to our house in Florida and it’s a pretty easy drive. There are a few things that can make it easier and way more fun so here’s what I bring on roadtrips:

Clothes:

I always roadtrip in leggings, a sports bra and my most comfortable t-shirt. I wear flip flops because I hate driving in shoes (whoops), as soon as I get in the car, I put socks on because my mom usually keeps the air on our feet and I would like to keep all 10 of my toes (kidding, sort of). I keep a bag that’s easy to reach and it has my favorite UVA (go Hoos!) sweatshirt in it just in case I get super cold (I usually don’t need it, but it’s always good to have).

I always keep a book (or two) with me if I’m in the passenger’s seat, it’s the only place I can read when I’m in the car. I might start listening to audiobooks to see how I like it, I feel like I’ll get more books read. I’ll try it and keep you guys posted.

In my purse, I have three (whoops) things of chapstick, lotion, hand sanitizer, my headphones (because music is my favorite thing), obvious things like my wallet, keys, tissues, and band aids because you really never know when you’ll need one. I have medicine like ibuprofen, tylenol sinus, and tums handy in case anyone needs it. I pack my glasses case which has a cleaning cloth in it so I can see. And most importantly, I always have two extra phone chargers with me.

Since I like to be in control of things (my mom says it’s an issue, I don’t think so), I love driving, and the rule is the driver is in control of the radio so I put on my favorite Spotify playlist and hit the road. The playlist is 33 hours (whoops) but it has pretty much every type of music. I find it fun because it keeps you on your toes when you shuffle it.

The biggest tip I have is to plan your stops (food, gas, bathroom breaks) because I can’t count how many times we’ve seen a food exit and the place is closed or there’s road work around it. Also, everyone hates stopping for the bathroom a million times (if it’s an emergency it’s obviously a different story).

Pack snacks, drinks, and if you like car games have a list of them ready to go. Make sure to get out and walk around some or else your feet will swell and that’s no fun for anyone.

Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun on roadtrips. I think they are so much fun and it’s a great way to talk to someone, and see how they act on long trips.

Have a great (road)trip!
