How To: Cheer Yourself Up

I’ve been down in the dumps recently (boys are stupid) and while I know it’s stupid of me to let a boy control my feelings, it’s what I do (I’m trying to get better at it) so please don’t judge me. After laying in bed for a few days, eating way too much ice cream and crying more than I thought was possible, I have finally started to feel a little bit better and this is how I got back to my happy self.

  1. Let yourself be sad

Don’t ever let anyone tell you your feelings aren’t valid enough to be sad over. No one can tell you how you should/shouldn’t feel. If you’re sad, let it out girl (or guy), cry. Cry for days, if you have to lock your door and play some loud music; do it. Crying makes me feel better just for the sake of letting myself be that sad. It feels like a release of all your sad feelings. Crying to me is therapeutic.

2. Watch your favorite movies

My favorite movie is Legally Blonde, it inspired me to be a lawyer. When I’m feeling down in the dumps, I pop the movie in, quote every single line (no one will watch it with me anymore because I quote every line-whoops). Seeing Elle go through her Warner break up and getting into law school and kicking butt while in law school always seems to inspire me to get over whatever stupid thing I’m sad about.

3. Treat yo’ self

Is there something you don’t buy because it’s too expensive? Or something that you’ve wanted for a long time, but could never actually buy it? Three words for when you’re feeling down: TREAT YO’ SELF. I’m not saying go buy hundreds of dollars worth of things when you’re sad but go get a $5 coffee from Starbucks you’ve been wanting to try. Go get a mani/pedi because it always makes you feel better (lesson learned from Elle Woods fyi). Order that bracelet online that you’ve wanted. Go to the movies, do something that will make you happy.

4. Go on an Adventure

After two days of not wanting to talk to anyone, my best friend came over and dragged me to go to see the new Beauty and the Beast movie (which is amazing by the way), and we just drove around for a few hours after that. She let me talk about my feelings for three hours and never once made me feel like I was stupid for feeling the way I was. You don’t have to go far to have an adventure with your best friend. We drove around our city and explored.

5. Listen to sad songs

Does anyone else like listening to sad songs while sad? I love it, I don’t know why but if I listen to enough sad songs, it makes me feel better. I have a playlist on Spotify that is 100% all sad songs and I’ll link the playlist here (I also have the same playlist on Apple Music + the addition of Taylor Swift songs).

If all else fails;

6. Drink your favorite wine and lay in bed

Take a sick day, get some wine and lay in bed. Don’t talk to anyone, just acknowledge your feelings and know that they aren’t stupid. It’s okay to not talk to anyone for a day, but don’t make it a habit. At the same time, take as much time as you need.

I promise, you’ll feel better soon. I did and you can too. Life is hard sometimes and boys are stupid (most of the time). I promise life gets better, and it’s okay to be sad sometimes. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. You are worth so much more than the reason that’s making you sad.

(This post was also a pep talk to myself, so preaching from experience)
