Taylor Swift is my favorite singer, ever. Like she’s my #1 all time, I cry when she releases new music, best singer in the world, favorite. I know there’s a lot of controversy around her and if she can sing or not (obviously she can, ask her 10 Grammy awards) and her boy issues. Well, newsflash, everyone has boy issues and Taylor is just in the public eye so her’s are public. And she really hasn’t had that many boyfriends to be getting all this slut shaming. Okay, okay, I’m getting on a rant about her and this is not a defend Taylor rant post, this is to tell you about why I love her and my top 15 favorite songs of hers. I tried to narrow it down to 10 but I just couldn’t do it (I know, I have an issue).
So, I was 10 when Taylor’s first album came out and I can remember memorizing all the words to Tim McGraw the day I heard it. Since that day, I have been a fan. I’ve grown up with her and while she’s 6 years older than me, her music helped me through my boy issues. From the age of 10 (I was dramatic), to now, when I’m feeling down, or heartbroken, or happy and excited, she is the artist I turn to.
Without Taylor Swift, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I would still be the shy, heartbroken 15 year old I was almost 6 years ago (wow). But I’m not that girl and it’s because Taylor Swift taught me that it is okay to express your feelings, it’s okay to like a guy, and it’s okay if he doesn’t like you back. So without further adieu, here are my top 15 Taylor Swift songs, the album it’s on & why it’s one of my favorites.
- Dear John – Speak Now (2010)
This song, wow is all I can say. After my first major heart break when I was 17 (less dramatic, I promise) this song got me through it all. From seeing the first guy to ever break my heart to not even caring about if he looked my way, it was this song. It explains the unhealthy relationships that can happen and how we don’t have to deal with it. Favorite lyrics from the song are “well maybe it’s me and my blind optimism to blame, or maybe it’s you and your sick need to give love and take it away.” “You are an expert at sorry, and keeping lines blurry, never impressed by me acing your tests. All the girls that you’ve run dry have tired, lifeless eyes because you burned them out. But I took your matches before a fire could catch me, so don’t look now. I’m shining like fireworks over your sad, empty town.”
2. All Too Well – Red (2012)
I think this song made every fan hate Jake Gyllenhaal, not going to lie. This song also got me through the same heartbreak as Dear John did, I am equally thankful to both songs for allowing me to identify with Taylor. Also, I want to thank Taylor for being so transparent with these songs, if you saw her perform All Too Well (2014 Grammy Awards), you saw how heart broken she was. This is such a raw song, and it still gets me teary eyed 9/10 times. My favorite lyrics from this song are “I might be okay, but I’m not fine at all.” “you tell me about your past thinking your future was me.” “I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to.” “Maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much but maybe this thing was a masterpiece before you tore it all up.” “And you call me up again just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest.” “I’d like to be my old self again, but I’m still trying to find it.”
3. You Are in Love – 1989 Deluxe (2014)
Honestly, I cried the first time I heard this song. I love how it captures the start of a love, and the journey of getting to the “I love you’s”. It’s such a cute, perfect song and I 100% plan to dance at this at my wedding. Favorite lyrics from the song are “you keep his shirt, he keeps his word” “you kiss on sidewalks, you fight and you talk. One night, he wakes, strange look on his face, pauses then says you’re my best friend. And you knew what it was, he is in love.” “You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars. And why I’ve spent my whole life trying to put it into words.”
4. Out of the Woods performed at the GRAMMY Museum
Out of the Woods is off of 1989 album but in this version, it’s acoustic and it’s the best version of this song. She plays the piano and her vocals are so raw and perfect during this version. Don’t get me wrong, the regular version is perfect, I just find this version to be more personal. She talks a little bit about the song and how she wrote this song about the anxiety she had towards a certain relationship (lookin’ at you Harry Styles) and how even those relationships are special, but fragile. Favorite lyrics include “you took a polaroid of us then discovered, the rest of the world was black and white, we were in screaming color.” “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon, 20 stitches in the hospital room, when you started crying baby I did too. When the sun came up I was looking at you. Remember when we couldn’t take the heat, I walked out said I’m setting you free but the monsters turned out to be just trees. When the sun came up you were looking at me.”
Listen to this version here.
6. The Moment I Knew – Red Deluxe (2012)
Ugh, another Jake Gyllenhaal song, equally as emotional to listen to. This song is talking about how she knew things weren’t right with him, and how she knew things were ending. You can almost feel her heart breaking during this song. Honestly, it’s really hard to choose my favorite lyrics from this song because all the lyrics are so amazing and true about relationships, but I do have some lyrics that stick out more than others, “and there was one thing missing, at that was the moment I knew.” “There in the bathroom, I try not to fall apart, and the sinking feeling starts as I say hopelessly, he said he’d be here”. “And what do you do when the one who means the most to you, is the one who didn’t show?”
7. Everything Has Changed – Red (2012)
First off, this song has Ed Sheeran in it so I automatically loved it, also this song is so fun. I like how it’s like an old friendship turning into something more. My all time favorite lyric from this song is “all I feel in my stomach is butterflies, the beautiful kind, making up for lost time.” That lyric is going to be one of my Instagram captions one day, promise it.
8. Back to December – Speak Now (2010)
I ROOTED SO HARD FOR TAYLOR AND TAYLOR (I’m still upset if you can’t tell). I too, Taylor Swift, have commitment issues and push people away when they get too close. She’s obviously come over her issues, I am still working on it, but if she can do it, so can I. This really hits home because I missed my chance with a really amazing guy, and I wish I could take back leaving him and truly apologize to him and tell him this song is my life with him. Lyrics like “turns out freedom ain’t nothing but missing you, wishing I realized what I had when you were mine. I’d go back to December and make it all right. I go back to December all the time” (for me it was September). But again “maybe this is wishful thinking, probably mindless dreaming, but if we loved again I swear I’d love you right.” HOW ACCURATE for my life. The accuracy of this song is why I love it so much.
9. Wonderland – 1989 Deluxe (2014)
This song is fun, it reminds me of Alice in Wonderland which is one of my favorite movies (I like the people version better than the cartoon, weird I know). I just like the fun beat to it. I like how it’s a new relationship, and you don’t really care what people say because all that matters is the two of you. My favorite lyric from this song is “you searched the world for something else to make you feel like what we had and in the end in wonderland we both went mad.”
10. Wildest Dreams – 1989 (2014)
“He’s so tall and handsome as hell, he’s so bad but he does it so well” this song is about only seeing someone in your dreams after things haven’t worked out. The secret message of this song is He only saw her in his dreams. This song is still my ringtone (over two years later), so it’s one of my favorite songs ever. One of my favorite lyrics in the song are “you’ll see me in hindsight, tangled up with you all night, burning it down.”
11. Last Kiss – Speak Now (2010)
Joe Jonas breaking my heart with this song, let me tell you. My favorite line in the entire song is “I don’t know how to be something you miss.” Because it’s relevant to everyone who’s ever missed someone who doesn’t miss them. I imagined myself with someone who hurt me and this song really went to heart because I did see us together for forever and Taylor saw herself together with him for the rest of her life. I also like the “so I’ll watch your life in pictures like I used to watch you sleep, and I feel you forget me like I used to feel you breathe. And I keep up with our old friends just to ask them how you are, I hope it’s nice where you are. I hope the sun shines, and it’s a beautiful day and something reminds you you wished you had stayed.”
12. Style – 1989 (2014)
I love Harry Styles and no matter the outcome of their relationship, I am thankful for this song. It’s such a fun song and I love how Harry came back and wrote Perfect as a response (I have a mashup of the two songs, it’s amazing). I just like how it’s a perfect couple who can’t be together but can’t be apart. “I said I’ve heard that you’ve been out and about with some other girl, he says what you heard is true but I can’t stop thinking about you and I said I’ve been there too a few times.” I just like the fun upbeat feel to this song.
13. Blank Space – 1989 (2014)
Nice to meet you, where you been? I just love this song, and no matter how many times the radio plays it, I will always love it. I love how Taylor used the media as a joke for this song. She literally wrote this song about who the media thinks she is and I think it was a fabulous idea. This whole song is a favorite lyric of mine, like there are no downsides to any of the lyrics in this song.
14. Forever & Always (Piano Version) – Fearless Platinum Edition (2008)
Joe Jonas broke my heart when he broke up with Taylor on a phone call, I was 12 when it happened and 6 years later, I’m still a little salty about it. But, this song came out of it and for that I am thankful. I like the piano version better, again, it sounds more personal and I love personal songs. This song is an oldie, but a goodie, I don’t have certain favorite lyrics from this song, I just love the song as a whole.
14. Tell Me Why – Fearless (2008)
Firm believer that this is one of the most underrated TSwift songs ever. Most people skip over this song because it wasn’t one of her huge hits but it definitely deserved to be. Some of my favorite lyrics include “and I know that you see what you’re doing to me, so tell me why” “you could write a book on how to ruin someone’s perfect day.” “Why do you have to make me feel small, so you can feel whole inside? Why do you have to put down my dreams so you’re the only thing on my mind?”
15. The Other Side of the Door – Fearless Platinum Edition (2008)
I didn’t even know this song existed until last year, and now that I’ve found it, I love it. Like, Taylor is one of us girls, you know when we say leave, we actually don’t want you to leave right? Well, Taylor gets it, and that’s what this song is. It’s also a really fun song and has a good beat to it. My favorite lyrics are at the end “all I need is on the other side of the door, with your face and the beautiful eyes, and the conversation with the little white lies. And the faded picture of a beautiful night. You carry me from your car up the stairs, and I broke down crying, was she worth this mess? After everything and that little black dress, after everything I must confess, I need you.”
Thank you Taylor for everything. It was very hard to only choose 15 songs, but these are my favorite ones and they’ve gotten me through the toughest times, but also the best of times. I will never be able to thank her enough.
